Cheiloscopic analysis in dental students of the city of Cali
Main Article Content
SUMMARY
Objective: To make the cheiloscopic analysis
in dental students of the city of Cali
through the impression of the lip furrows
in fine cardboard paper and digital photography
of the lips.
Material and Methods: Observational
study of descriptive type that determined
the pattern of lip furrows through Renaud’s
method in 47 dental students (24 women
and 23 men) of the University del Valle
belonging to predominantly Caucasoid racially
mixed ethnic group. The contingency
coefficient was used to associate the pattern
of lip furrows between gender, superior and
inferior lips, right and left quadrants, and
photographs and impressions. A p<0.05
was considered statistically significant.
Results: The more frequent patterns of lip
furrows for men and women were the A and
the C. There were not associations between
sex and the patterns of lip furrows in the
superior and inferior lips, or right and left
sides. There was a high correlation between
the digital photography and the labial paper
impression. It was not observed sexual dimorphism,
but it was observed bilaterality
in the same lip.
Conclusions: The Renaud’s method demonstrated
to be very limited since there
were found 19 identical cheiloscopic formulas,
since the description of the pattern
of labial prints does not consider either the
number or distribution of furrows within
the lip. For that reason, and given to the low
correlation between men and women and
according to the findings of this study, the
pattern of labial furrows can be considered
only and unique.
